Third generation

Around 1400 Jan Maelwael decided to take his nephews, Paul, Herman and Johan Limbourg, the sons of his sister Metta, and therefore the third generation, to Paris. In 1380 Metta married Arnold Limbourg, a wood sculptor. As a wood sculptor, Arnold had a direct relationship with the painters or 'upholsterers' who were responsible for painting colourful designs on the wood sculptures, as was the tradition in the Middle Ages. Arnold had taken over the direction of the studio when his brother-in-law, Jan Maelwael, left for France in 1396.
